  27.      any commercial product sold as a `DOS shell'.  We've been praised
  28.      for making ELFTREE simple to use (it hasn't been easy!), fast (it's
  29.      written in Borland's Turbo C and Turbo Assembler), and intuitive.

  31.      ideas, to make it such a wonderful product.  No programmer has the
  32.      skill to think of all the wonderful ideas blended together in this

  35.          Why Shareware?
  36.  
  37.      This is a shareware version of ELFTREE.  It is distributed as
  38.      shareware for the following reasons:

  40.      1. You get to use it for 30 days, to see how you like it.  We are
  41.        sure you will love it.
  42.      2. When you ask for features to be included, they are usually
  43.        added to the next release - often within a week!  This means
  44.        that you don't have to wait six months to a year for the next
  45.        upgrade, a problem with most commercial software.  Also, you
  46.        get to see your ideas incorporated!
  47.      3. Advertising is expensive.  For example, a full page ad in one
  48.        issue of one computing magazine can cost $25,000.  By telling
  49.        10 of your friends about this great product, and giving them
  50.        a shareware copy of it, you can keep its cost extremely low.
  51.        If you upload the latest version to BBS's you know, you'll be
  52.        doing an even greater service.

  55.          Tell Me More About Shareware

  57.      Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before
  58.      buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you
  59.      are expected to register. Individual programs differ on details --
  60.      some request registration while others require it, some specify a
  61.      maximum trial period.  With registration, you get anything from the
  62.      simple right to continue using the software to an updated program
  63.      with printed manual.

  65.      Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and
  66.      the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
  67.      exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
  68.      programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are of
  69.      comparable quality.  The main difference is in the method of
  70.      distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy and
  71.      distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific
  72.      group. For example, some authors require written permission before
  73.      a commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.

  75.      Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
  76.      should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether
  77.      it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting
  78.      your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.  And because
  79.      the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate
  80.      money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the product, you don't pay
  81.      for it!

  85.      ELFTREE is produced by a member of the Association of Shareware
  86.      Professionals (ASP).  ASP wants to make sure that the shareware
  87.      principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a shareware-
  88.      related problem with an ASP member by contacting the member directly,
  89.      ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a
  90.      dispute or problem with an ASP member, but does not provide technical
  91.      support for members' products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at

  95.      All users of ELFTREE must register and pay for their copies of ELFTREE
  96.      within 30 days of first use or their license is withdrawn.  For site
  97.      licensing, please refer to the file SITELICE.DOC elsewhere in this
  98.      package.  If this file is missing, please contact Elvish Consulting at

  101.      Anyone distributing ELFTREE for any kind of remuneration must first
  102.      contact Elvish Consulting at the address below for authorization.  This
  103.      authorization will be automatically granted to distributors recognized
  104.      by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for shareware distributors,
  105.      and such distributors may begin offering ELFTREE immediately (However
  106.      Elvish Consulting must still be advised so that the distributor can be
  107.      kept up-to-date with the latest version of ELFTREE.).

  109.      You are encouraged to pass a copy of ELFTREE along to your friends for
  110.      evaluation.  Please encourage them to register their copy if they find

  118.          Does Shareware Mean Crippled?

  120.      This version has all the functions of the version you'll get when you
  121.      register, but there is an opening message screen, and a delay before
  122.      you can start using the product.  Also, this version does not have
  123.      any additional progams you can get when you register for the full
  124.      version: editor, external viewers, etc.  Read on for information on
  125.      how to get these valuable enhancements.

  127.      You are free to use ELFTREE for 30 days, to test it and to determine
  128.      if it is useful to you.  If you are still using it after 30 days, you
  129.      must register with us.  The file ORDER.DOC, included with this package,
  130.      has an order form.  Just fill out the form, print it, and mail it to
  131.      us along with your check or money order.

  133.      When you register with us, you get the latest version of ELFTREE,
  134.      with all reported bugs fixed, with any new or enhanced features
  135.      that may have been incorporated, a professionally printed manual,
  136.      a toll-free number for tech support, notices of updates as they
  137.      become available, and one FREE update.  In addition, you can get the
  138.      ELFTREE editor, any viewer(s) we've developed, and a flat-file
  139.      database sort program.  This is a great value for you!  More
  140.      importantly, you make us want to keep improving ELFTREE so that
  141.      it can do even more for you!

  143.          Cheap Upgrades!

  145.      Once you license ELFTREE, you can upgrade to the latest registered
  146.      version at a nominal cost.  Through December 31, 1993, this fee is
  147.      US$5, a very reasonable cost for you.

  149.          ELFTREE System Requirements

  151.      ELFTREE requires you to have a screen so that you can see what it
  152.      shows you, a keyboard to give it commands, and some memory to hold
  153.      information.  You determine how much memory it needs (minimum is
  154.      about 150K free) by customizing it, whether by command-line switches
  155.      see end of this document) or with the [F4] key once it first comes
  156.      up for you.  It can take advantage of EGA or VGA displays, it works
  157.      with the largest hard disks (even under DOS 3.31 and above), it works
